But the bit that helps you get found on google… SEO which stands for search engine optimisation. This is a phrase you may have heard before. SEO is all about making sure your website is as optimised so it can show up in Google searches.
I have been digging even deeper the usual into the SEO side of things as this is something I am pouring into my website templates I am building in abundance! All of my templates will be as optimised and SEO rich as they can be for a template. There will also be an accompanying guide which will come with each template which includes a 7 step strategy. This SEO strategy is there to help you optimise your content and any edits you make to the template. This means you can tick off the foundational parts of your SEO strategy. Whilst building your website with one of my templates. Alternatively if you chose to get your website made from myself or another designer. The on page SEO will be something they can help you with. This will either be as an add on service or inclusive of their web design package.
This weeks focus – On page SEO to set your website up for success
With this in mind this week I thought why not share some of this SEO wisdom with you. So you can add these strategies to your own website and take the necessary steps to getting found on google.
I am going to break this down into bit sized chunks to remove any overwhelm. Making the actions super simple to do. This way you can do something once a week or month. Or focus on one thing at a time and work your way through these actions.
Here are 5 SEO Tips for Your Website to help boost your Website visibility starting with the foundational pieces and the on page SEO side of the strategy:
1. Alt Text for Images
Search engines can’t “see” images, but they can read the alt text. So in order for Google and screen readers to make sense of the images you are using they read your alt tags when they come across an image on your website. This benefits both you as google knows what the images are, and makes your website more accessible so that people who need to use screen readers also know that the image is.
This is something google loves to see too as it makes your website more inclusive to more people and moves you up the ranks on the google searches (and for other search engines too).
One super simple way of increasing your visibility, and keeping google happy is to describe your images clearly, and not go super generic, see the example below. A pro tip where possible try to include relevant keywords where it makes sense. Google will know if you are just spamming keywords.
What it does: Helps search engines understand your images, improving accessibility and SEO.
✅ Good Example: “Brand strategist working on a mood board with color swatches and a laptop”
🚫 Bad Example: “Photo123.jpg” or “Woman working” (Too vague and doesn’t add value.)
2. Meta Descriptions Matter
This is the short snippet that appears in search results on Google. Its the bit you see in the google search results, which tells you a bit about the page being listed. Keep the meta description under 155 characters, make it engaging, and include a keyword or 2, and if possible a call to action. Meta description is imporant when it comes to connecting with your ideal clients. When they are searching for your services its the meta description along with the SEO title that shows up on google. Based on this small snippet your ideal client will decide if they want to click through to your website. Therefore its important to use this space intentionally and wisely. Think about what makes you click through to a website.
What it does: Encourages people to click on your site in search results.
✅ Good Example: “Struggling to attract premium clients? Discover luxury brand design services tailored for high-end businesses. Book a free call today!”
🚫 Bad Example: “Welcome to my website. I offer design services. Click here to learn more!” (Too generic, no keyword, no incentive.)
3. Mobile Optimisation is Non-Negotiable
Google priorities mobile-friendly sites! Make sure your site design looks seamless on all devices. This doesn’t mean making thing super small to fit on mobile… This mean reordering important elements on the page, and using more of a stacking layout. So the sections and elements on your website are easy to read and buttons can be clicked with ease. After all there is no point to having a call to action on your website if no one can click it on mobile.
The most common design suggestion here is to stack your sections and elements. As well as making them bigger where its need and making big header fonts smaller. Also ensuring there is enough space around each element, so that buttons can be clicked and content can be read with ease. This is important with most of your traffic coming from mobile.
What it does: Ensures your site looks great on mobile devices (this is where most visitors will come from, well over 60%).
✅ Good Example: A VA’s website with reasonable sized, readable fonts, buttons that are easy to tap, and no cut-off text.
🚫 Bad Example: A VA’ website with text overlapping images, tiny font sizes, and a “Book Now” button that’s too small to click on mobile.
4. Speed It Up
Large images and unnecessary animations can slow your site down. Compress images and remove anything that isn’t adding real value. To do this you can resize your images and compress them before uploading them to use on your website. There are free and paid ways to do this. When it comes to animations I always advise using them in moderation to ensure your website loads in good time.
What it does: Prevents slow loading times, which effects you SEO efforts and frustrate visitors.
✅ Good Example: A social media manager’s site using compressed images (under 500KB each) and minimal animations.
🚫 Bad Example: A social media manager’s site using oversized 5MB+ images and auto-playing videos on every page, causing long load times.
5. Simple Site Structures Wins
Keep navigation clear and user-friendly. A logical layout helps visitors (and Google!) understand your content. This helps you to rank higher on Google. If you are not sure if your website is easy to use, one way you can check this, is by getting ideal clients to try and use your website. If they can’t easily and simply complete your main call to action is it time to look at the flow and layout of your website. Keeping things simple means more of your ideal clients will be more likely to take action and it will be easier for more people to take action. We don’t need mazes and mind games on your website, keep things clear and simple.
Keeping a simple and clean structure keeps your website looking timeless. After all your website is timeless and not a trend!
If you are not sure where to start with this, reach out and I can help you. Alternatively googling simple website structure can be a good place to start too.
What it does: Helps users (and Google) navigate your site easily.
✅ Good Example: A brand designer’s website with a clear menu: Home | About | Services | Portfolio | Contact.
🚫 Bad Example: A cluttered site with hidden pages, vague menu labels like “More” or “Extras,” and no clear way to book a call.
