Showit Mobile Design: What You Need to Know Before DIY-ing Your Website”

This week I want to share some insight with you about the reality of building your own website. This isn’t to scare you. It’s to prepare you so you know what to expect and avoid shocks along the way. Building a website can feel overwhelming. So, I will break this into sections and cover one topic per blog post. Today, I want to talk about Showit mobile design.

This doesn’t just apply to Showit. Most website platforms work the same, except WordPress, which is better for mobile design. Most website builders provide basic tools to help you with mobile layouts. But honestly, as a web designer and software engineer with 14 years’ experience, these tools still aren’t great.

That’s why today I want to show you what the backend of building your own website can look like. We’ll focus on the mobile design side of things. I’m using Showit because I’m currently working on a Showit template for my template shop. It was the easiest example to use. Be sure to read the full post and watch the video for the full picture.

I’ve worked with many different website platforms over the years, and here’s the truth. Other than WordPress, most website builders don’t help much with mobile design.

What do I mean by this?

When you switch to “mobile view” for the first time, you may be shocked. Many website builders will leave your mobile site looking messy and unusable. This means you’ll need to manually edit and adapt every section for mobile. I’m telling you this because it’s important to set expectations. If you think your website is finished, then click on mobile view and see chaos, it’s frustrating. You should know what’s involved before starting your project.

Why does this happen?

Platforms like Showit, Wix, and Squarespace try their best with mobile tools. But their “mobile options” are often basic and inconsistent. More often than not, they don’t provide much real help with mobile optimisation. Leaving you to do everything manually yourself.

Yes, you always need to tweak for mobile, even in WordPress. But on some platforms, the amount of manual work can feel overwhelming. You’ll end up fixing sections, resizing text, shifting images, and adjusting spacing on every single page.

Showit mobile design example below

This isn’t a slam on Showit! I actually love it and use it all the time. But I want you to be prepared for what you’ll see when you first view your new site in mobile mode.

Watch the video below to see Showit mobile design before and after edits. You’ll notice a clear difference. This can almost double the time you need to finish your website if building it from scratch. Imagine thinking you’re ready to publish your website, only to realise you must now optimise every single element for mobile.

So what’s the solution?

If you’re building a site from scratch, like the showit mobile design example above, this manual optimisation work is inevitable. But there is an easier way… You have a few options which mean you don’t need to spend the time and the overwhelm doing this all yourself. Because when you look at the at video and just see the elements stacked on top of each other where would you even begin! That said lets go through your options.

  • Option 1: Hire a designer – You’ll get a beautiful, fully-optimised site, but this can be a big investment.
  • Option 2: Invest in a professional template – This gives you instant access to a website or sales page that has already been designed and fully optimised for desktop and mobile. All you have to do is plug in your content and branding, and you’re ready to launch without the stress, countless hours, and overwhelm of having to do it all yourself.
