The Ultimate Website Preparation Checklist for Business Owners

When you’re ready to get a new website whether it’s custom-built or a beautiful template the last thing you want is to feel stressed, overwhelmed, and unprepared. That’s why having everything ready before you start your website project is such a game-changer. In this blog post we will be jumping into the ultimate website preparation checklist for online business owners.

A clear website preparation checklist not only speeds up the process, it ensures your site is strategic, polished, and ready to convert from day one.

Here’s everything you need to prepare, why it matters, and how to get it done. That is why this is call the ultimate website preparation checklist!

The ultimate website preparation checklist:

1. Your Brand Clarity

What it is: Your business name, tagline, mission statement, values, and target audience details.
Why it matters: Your brand is the foundation of your website without clarity, your site will lack direction and consistency.
How it helps in future: Makes your messaging stronger, connects with your ideal clients instantly, and builds trust.
Action step: Write down your brand details in a single document and keep it handy for your designer or yourself. This means you don’t have to try and look through a ton of documents to find the one bit of information you need mid build!

2. Brand Visuals

What it is: Your logo, submarks, colour palette, fonts, icons, illustrations, and brand patterns/textures.
Why it matters: Visual consistency makes your brand instantly recognisable and memorable.
How it helps in future: Keeps your site looking cohesive, premium, and on-brand across every page. Be known for the brand you have built. Don’t blend into the background with pick and mix branding.
Action step: Gather your brand assets into one folder (label each file clearly). I have a folder called branding and have everything organised in there.

3. High-Quality Images

What it is: Professional brand photos, product images, lifestyle shots, and any other imagery you’ll use on the site. This included any videos you want to include on your website too.
Why it matters: Your website needs more than one or two photos images set the tone and sell your brand visually. This will position you in a much stronger position then having mix and match images and selfies on your website.
How it helps in future: Gives you ready-to-use visuals for blogs, social media, and marketing without scrambling later.
Action step: Book a brand photoshoot or select images from your library that reflect your current brand.

4. Website Copy

What it is: Written text for your homepage, about page, services page, contact page, and any other sections your site will have. For example sales pages, or blog intro for your main blog page.
Why it matters: Words drive sales a beautiful design won’t convert without strategic, persuasive copy. Copy that speaks to your ideal client. Remeber this is the copy that will speak and do the selling and converting for you when you aren’t there to do it for yourself.
How it helps in future: Your site will launch faster because you won’t be writing content at the last minute. Or just panic writing, and telling yourself you will ‘come back and update this’ because we both know if you do it will be months if at all!
Action step: Create a Google Doc for each page and start drafting your copy.

5. Your Offer Suite

What it is: Clear details of the services, packages, or products you offer, including pricing, deliverables, and timelines.
Why it matters: Your website needs to clearly show what’s on offer and why it’s worth buying.
How it helps in future: Makes it easy to update, expand, or promote new offers without redoing the whole site. This will also give you a holistic view of your whole product suite so you can iron out any issues before adding everything to your website.
Action step: Finalise your offers and gather the key information for each. Again you are going to want to put this into a doc or one place where you have easy access to it.

6. Testimonials and Social Proof

What it is: Written reviews, video testimonials, case studies, or logos of brands you’ve worked with.
Why it matters: Builds credibility and trust people buy from businesses they trust.
How it helps in future: Adds weight to your offers and makes new leads feel confident in choosing you. This is going to help positioning you as the authority within your niche.
Action step: Reach out to past clients/customers for fresh testimonials. Collate the testimonials that you do have into one place and start thinking about where and how you would like to use them.

8. Legal pages

What it is: Privacy policy, terms & conditions, disclaimer, and accessibility statement.
Why it matters: Protects your business legally and builds trust with your audience.
How it helps in future: Saves you from legal issues and keeps you compliant with regulations. Note on this, this is the responsibility of the business to have these documents in place not the designer. The designer can build and design and pages for you, but it on you to make sure you have the right legal documents for your business and website.
Action step: Create or purchase templates for your legal pages before launch. Get your legal documents in place, research what you need, and get these in order before you start work on your website making it easier when you start the website process as its one less thing to worry about and to scramble to get.

8. Domain and Hosting Setup

What it is: Your domain name (e.g., yourbusiness.com) and hosting platform.
Why it matters: Without these, your site can’t go live.
How it helps in future: Ensures a smooth launch without last-minute tech delays.
Action step: Purchase your domain and confirm your hosting plan. If you are working with a designer they can advise you on this. But if you are working alone, be sure to do some research into what platform will work best for you price and service. Some hosting companies allow you to purchase your domain through their platform like Wix, but others you will need to purchase your domain separately, like showit.

9. Content Plan

What it is: A plan for blog posts, resources, or any content you’ll add regularly.
Why it matters: Keeps your site active and boosts SEO.
How it helps in future: Attracts consistent traffic and keeps your brand relevant.
Action step: Write a list of 10 blog post ideas and start drafting the first few. Have you freebies on standby too so they are ready to be added to your website.

10. Clear Call-To-Actions (CTAs)

What it is: The next steps you want your visitors to take (book a call, buy a template, invest in a course, join your list, etc.).
Why it matters: Without a clear next step, visitors leave without taking action.
How it helps in future: Increases conversions and revenue from your site. This is a big conversion point for your website and ensure you are selling in your sleep.
Action step: Decide the number 1 goal for each page and write your CTA in advance.
